Conclusion: Transformations and Transitions in Field Education

Grant Charles and Julie Drolet

While it is obvious that social work field education is in crisis it should be acknowledged that one of the things that can come out of difficulty is transformation. This book is primarily about transformation.

There are many transformations and transitions happening in social work education. Field education has been changing in response to shifts in practice settings, the pandemic, and technology. Students go through a transformation as they move from being a student to being a practitioner.

This book seeks to serve in both change capacities. The book highlights key concepts about field education system change as well as serving as a support to students as they enter their placements. It helps to serve as a bridge between the classroom and placements as students transition between the two. The book builds upon the foundational knowledge provided in the classroom by helping to expand upon what the students have learned while also providing new ways of being and interacting in the field and the profession.

This concluding chapter poses a number of questions to help you review each chapter and use what you learned during your transition into field placements.

The next questions move from a focus on each chapter to a more micro approach using the collective knowledge from the book.

Thinking about these key messages you have taken from the chapters, discuss what they may have in common.

How might the barriers associated with the crisis that is currently occurring have a negative impact upon your learning experience in placement?

Take one or more of these barriers that were identified in the book and come up with a plan to mitigate the issue for yourself.

List three messages from the book that brings you optimism about changes happening in field education.

How might you take the knowledge from the book to help instigate change within your placement and in the profession?

The purpose of this book is to help prepare students for placement and to facilitate change within social work field education. This change is needed for a number of reasons including in response the current crisis within our field education system. However, it goes beyond the ongoing crisis that was occurring pre-pandemic and worsened in response to the conditions brought about in response to COVID-19. The book also hopes to contribute to the changes that are occurring within social work as we seek to rectify harms and move towards a profession based upon social justice.
